Electric Two-Wheeler Maker River Mobility Raises $120 Mn Series C, Its First Major Backing From Indian Institutions

BENGALURU — Electric two-wheeler manufacturer River Mobility has raised $120 Mn (about ₹1,141 Cr) in a Series C funding round co-led by Elev8 Venture Partners and Claypond Capital, in what is one of the largest private funding rounds in India's electric two-wheeler segment to date. The oversubscribed round, comprising both equity and venture debt, also saw participation from Singularity AMC, Anicut Capital, 360 ONE Asset, JIF Capital and HDFC AMC — marking River's first major backing from Indian institutional investors.

Existing global investors including Yamaha Motor Corporation, Al Futtaim Group and Mitsui & Co. also participated in the equity round, while Alteria Capital, Innoven Capital and Stride Ventures joined through venture debt. With this financing, River has raised approximately $188 Mn across equity and venture debt since its founding, adding to a global investor base that includes Marubeni Corporation, Lowercarbon Capital, Toyota Ventures, Maniv Mobility and Trucks VC.

Capacity Expansion and a New Greenfield Plant

Founded in March 2021 by Aravind Mani and Vipin George, River Mobility manufactures electric two-wheelers with a focus on utility-oriented products. Its flagship electric scooter, River Indie, was launched in 2023 with an emphasis on design, durability and utility rather than pure price competition. The company will use the fresh capital to expand capacity at its existing manufacturing facility, establish a new greenfield plant, launch new products in the utility lifestyle segment, and drive gross margin expansion and EBITDA profitability. River currently operates over 75 retail locations across India, with plans to scale to 350 stores by March 2028.

"A Defining Growth Phase" for India's Electric Two-Wheeler Market

"The confidence shown by both our existing and new investors reinforces our belief that there is tremendous opportunity to build India's first utility and design-based mobility brand," said Aravind Mani, co-founder and CEO of River Mobility. "This capital gives us the ability to accelerate our product roadmap, expand our manufacturing footprint and presence across the country."

Navin Honagudi, Managing Partner at Elev8 Venture Partners, framed the investment around the sector's maturation: "The electric two-wheeler market in India is entering a defining growth phase, driven by strong consumer adoption, improving economics, and increasing demand for differentiated products. River stands out for its sharp product thinking, exceptional execution capability, and a highly differentiated positioning in the market... We believe River is well-positioned to emerge as one of the defining EV companies from India." Sekhar Garisa, Managing Director at Claypond Capital, added that River has "combined disciplined execution and thoughtful product differentiation to rapidly grow and garner customer love in a competitive market."

Yamaha's Strategic Backing Reflects Deeper Technology Integration

Hajime Jim Aota, Chairman of Yamaha India Group, has previously credited River Mobility's vertically integrated EV technology platform as a key driver of the company's success — a notable endorsement given Yamaha's own decades of two-wheeler manufacturing expertise in India. The continued participation of established global automotive and mobility investors, alongside the round's first major infusion of Indian institutional capital, suggests River is being positioned by its backers as a category-defining player in India's electric two-wheeler market rather than simply another EV entrant in an increasingly crowded field.

The round's structure — combining equity from a broad mix of venture, family-office and institutional asset managers with venture debt from three separate lenders — also reflects a maturing capital-raising playbook among India's better-capitalised EV manufacturers, who increasingly blend debt and equity to fund capital-intensive manufacturing expansion without excessive equity dilution.

Why It Matters

River Mobility's raise signals sustained institutional confidence in India's electric two-wheeler sector even as competition intensifies among manufacturers, and it marks a notable shift in the composition of River's own investor base toward greater Indian institutional participation — a pattern increasingly visible across India's most capital-intensive hardware and mobility startups as domestic asset managers grow more comfortable backing manufacturing-heavy business models.

• River Mobility raised $120 Mn in a Series C round co-led by Elev8 Venture Partners and Claypond Capital.

• The round marks River's first major backing from Indian institutional investors.

• Total funding raised across equity and debt since 2021 now stands at approximately $188 Mn.

• Capital will fund capacity expansion, a new greenfield plant, and new utility-lifestyle EV products.

• River operates 75+ retail stores currently, targeting 350 stores by March 2028.
