DALLAS, TEXAS — Tarun Lal has retired as Chief Executive Officer of Dave & Buster's Entertainment, effective August 3, just over a year after taking the helm of the 250-location entertainment and dining chain. In a statement, Lal said he had made "the difficult personal decision to retire" in order to spend more time with his family in India, a choice the company said followed careful consideration. Chief Financial Officer Darin Harper, who has worked alongside Lal since June 2024, was named his successor effective the same day.

"I have made the difficult personal decision to retire and transition full-time leadership to Darin, in whom I have great confidence," Lal said. "I plan to remain involved with the business and have complete confidence in where this business is headed." Lal will continue to work with Harper through the transition and remain an advisor to the company through at least the end of fiscal year 2027.

A Short but Consequential Tenure

Dave & Buster's hired Lal in July 2025 to replace Chris Morris, who had stepped down in December 2024, at a moment when the company needed to reverse a stretch of declining same-store sales. Lal, who spent 25 years at Yum Brands and rose to president of KFC in the U.S., brought a background steeped in large-scale restaurant operations to a company that operates 184 Dave & Buster's locations across 43 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, plus 66 Main Event venues in 24 states.

The "Back-to-Basics" Turnaround

Under Lal, the company pursued what it called a "Back-to-Basics" strategy, focused on marketing, food and beverage quality, games and day-to-day operations. "Our Back-to-Basics plan is gaining meaningful traction across marketing, food and beverage, operations, games, and remodels, and the team executing it is extremely high quality and capable," Lal said in his retirement statement, expressing confidence that the strategy would continue to deliver results under new leadership.

Board Chairman Kevin Sheehan credited both leaders in the transition. "On behalf of the entire Board, I want to thank Tarun for his outstanding leadership and wish him and his family all the best," Sheehan said, while also describing Harper as "an exceptional leader who understands every aspect of this business, is deeply respected throughout the organization, and has been instrumental in developing and executing the strategy." Harper, who has nearly 30 years of finance and operating experience in entertainment and restaurant companies, previously served as CFO of Main Event Entertainment before its 2022 acquisition by Dave & Buster's.

A Personal Decision, Publicly Framed

Lal's stated reason for stepping down — the pull of family in India — is a relatively unusual one to see spelled out plainly in a public company's leadership transition announcement, and it lands as a data point in a broader, quieter pattern among some Indian-origin executives in the United States: senior leaders who, even after decades of building careers domestically, choose to recalibrate around family ties that remain anchored abroad. Lal's own trajectory — 25 years climbing the ranks at Yum Brands before a high-profile, if brief, run atop a public entertainment company — makes the decision to step back from an active CEO role notable regardless of the reason.

Cory Hatton, the company's Head of Entertainment Finance, Investor Relations and Treasurer, will serve as interim Chief Financial Officer while Dave & Buster's searches for a permanent replacement for Harper's former role. The company said the leadership change does not signal any shift in strategic direction, with Harper having been a co-architect of the Back-to-Basics plan since his arrival.

Why It Matters

For Dave & Buster's, the transition is designed to read as continuity rather than disruption — an internal promotion of the executive who helped design the current turnaround strategy, rather than a fresh external search during a period of operational momentum. For Lal, it closes a short but high-visibility chapter that followed a much longer career inside Yum Brands' KFC business. And for the broader diaspora narrative, it is a reminder that the calculus senior Indian-American executives make about career and family does not always run in one direction — toward deeper roots in the United States — even at the peak of a public-company leadership role.
