BENGALURU — Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL) has acquired the technology of Furrl, a Bengaluru-based AI-powered fashion discovery platform, in an all-cash deal for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition, confirmed on August 5, folds Furrl's AI Styling Engine and consumer-facing commerce app into Reliance Retail's ecosystem, along with the startup's entire team. Founder and CEO Esha Tiwary will join RRVL to lead new AI initiatives, while the rest of the product team will focus on scaling Furrl's technology across Reliance's broader commerce operations.
"We built Furrl with one conviction: that fashion discovery is broken and AI can fundamentally change that," Tiwary said. "This acquisition enables our technology to reach millions of customers with Reliance Retail's scale, and is a powerful validation of what our team built." Reliance Retail said the deal is part of its broader strategy to embed artificial intelligence across its consumer businesses. "At Reliance Retail, we are embedding AI and advanced technologies across our consumer businesses, enabling more personalized and engaging shopping experiences for customers," the company said in a statement.
From a Personal Shopping Problem to an Acquisition Target
Furrl was founded in 2022 by Tiwary, who built the company after struggling to find good Indian direct-to-consumer fashion amid an overcrowded and poorly curated online market. The startup's core technology, an AI Styling Engine, transformed fashion catalogue images into fully styled outfit recommendations tailored to individual shopper preferences — essentially outsourcing a stylist's eye to a machine. Over four years, Furrl scaled its platform to more than 50,000 products from over 200 fashion and lifestyle brands, building deep technical capability in catalogue intelligence, personalisation and outfit-level recommendation. Prior to the acquisition, the company had raised over ₹8 Cr from investors including PeerCapital, Sadev Ventures and Bharat Founders Fund.
AI Personalisation Becomes the New Battleground in Indian Ecommerce
The deal lands amid a broader race among India's largest ecommerce and retail platforms to bolt AI-driven personalisation onto their existing scale. Myntra has rolled out a conversational shopping assistant called Maya, while Nykaa is building a personalised virtual closet and storefront called Ask Nykaa. Former Flipkart executive Ranjith Boyanapalli's startup Flash is separately pursuing AI-powered product discovery and research. The stakes are considerable: India's ecommerce market, currently valued at $165 Bn, is projected to grow at a 22% CAGR to cross $450 Bn over the next five years, according to Inc42's 'D2C 3.0' report.

For Reliance Retail, the acquisition is a relatively low-cost, fast way to acquire a working AI capability rather than build one from scratch internally — a pattern industry observers expect to recur as India's retail conglomerates race to add AI to legacy scale. As one industry commentator put it, Furrl "spent four years building a home for hundreds of indie fashion brands and courting millions of discerning shoppers, only to discover that its real value lay not in owning the customer relationship but in the algorithm underneath it."
What Happens to Furrl's Technology Now
Following the acquisition, Furrl's technology is expected to strengthen Reliance Retail's AI-driven discovery and personalisation capabilities across its digital and omni-channel platforms — spanning properties like AJIO, Reliance Trends and its broader fashion and lifestyle portfolio. Tiwary's move into a leadership role focused on new AI initiatives suggests Reliance intends to use her expertise beyond just the acquired codebase, deploying her team's product thinking across a wider set of AI-first commerce initiatives within the conglomerate.
The acquisition also reflects a maturing pattern in India's startup ecosystem: increasingly, small teams building sharp, narrow AI technology are becoming acquisition targets for larger incumbents rather than pursuing independent scale as standalone consumer brands. For founders like Tiwary, that can mean a faster path to real-world reach — Furrl's outfit-recommendation technology now has the potential to touch millions of Reliance Retail customers rather than the platform's own, comparatively smaller user base.
Why It Matters
The Furrl acquisition is a small deal by transaction value, but it is a telling signal of where competitive advantage in Indian ecommerce is shifting: toward AI-driven personalisation layers that sit on top of retail scale rather than catalogue breadth alone. For India's broader startup ecosystem, it reinforces a growing acquisition pathway for early-stage, technically sharp startups — one where the algorithm, not the customer base, is the primary asset changing hands.
